PSYCHOLOGY

What is the course about?

Psychology is the study of mind and behaviour. Looking at Psychological theories, research, concepts, studies and methods.

This will appeal to:

  • People who enjoy exploring issues, dealing with how and why people behave in certain ways
  • People who are interested in finding out about the link between behaviour and environment
  • It is suitable for people who are looking for a course that would complement other AS and A Levels, such as English, Sociology or GNVQ Health & Social Care.

What will I learn?

  • Knowledge and understanding of psychological theories, research, studies and the methods used to collect data.

  • Exploration of the different areas of Psychology, such as cognitive, social development and research methods

  • A variety of skills including how to analyse and interpret Psychological information
  • An understanding of the ethical issues in Psychology
  • An awareness of how the study of Psychology can help you to understand our society

MODULE 1

Cognitive Psychology

Memory: Short-term memory and long-term memory; Forgetting; Critical issue – eyewitness testimony.

Developmental Psychology

Attachment: The development and variety of attachments; Deprivation and privation; Critical issue – day care.

MODULE 2

Physiological Psychology

Stress: Stress as a bodily response; Sources of stress; Critical issue – stress management.

Individual Differences

Abnormality: Defining psychological abnormality; Biological and physiological models of abnormality; Critical issue – eating disorders.

MODULE 3

Social Psychology

Social influence: Conformity and minority influence; Obedience to authority; Critical issue – ethical issues in psychological research.

Research Methods

Quantitative and qualitative research methods; Research design and implementation; Data analysis.

When does the course start?

The course starts in September of each year

How do I attend?

Normal daytime attendance.

Where applicable this subject may also be taken as a part time evening programme.

AQA

How long does the course last?

The course is taught as a one year programme.

What can I do next?

You may progress to A2 level.

AS + A2 levels are recognised qualifications for a wide range of courses in Higher Education.

Are there any entry requirments?

A GCSE Grade C or above in English and Maths would be helpful.

Are there any other requirements?

Students may be advised to purchase a specific revision text. There will be a small charge for photocopied booklets.

Multiple copies of the necessary text books and journals are available in the FE library. The Social Science Resource Base also contains books and articles that are needed to complete class work and assignments.

How is the course assessed?

100% External Examination

Unit 1 and Unit 2 are assessed by the candidate answering 2 structured questions Unit 3 the candidate is required to answer 1 structured question and 1 data response.

How much does the course cost?

All students who are joining a full time course and are under 19 years of age on the 1st September as their course commences, will not be required to pay tuition fees or examination fees.
Otherwise: To be confirmed.

Are there any exam fees?

Exam fees are not payable by 16-19 year olds sitting these units for the first time.
Mature students will be advised as to the exam fees when enrolling prior to the start of the course.
