CLASSICAL CIVILISATION

What is the course about?

At AS level you will study the role of women in ancient Athenian society, Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ and produce a piece of coursework based on the Peloponnesian War of 5th century BC.

If you continue onto A2 you will discover what life was like in Ancient Rome between the times of Tiberius and Nero, the importance of Greek tragedy and 2 of the great tragedians – Sophocles and Euripides, as well as creating a piece of coursework based on the life and times of Alexander the Great.

What will I learn?

  • Acquire through literature or material evidence knowledge and understanding of the classical world.
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of past societies and cultures
  • Apply critical and evaluative skills.
  • Gain an academic qualification suitable for higher education or directly into employment.

When does the course start?

The course starts in September of each year.

How do I attend?

Normal daytime attendance.

Who is the awarding Body?

AQA

How long does the course last?

The course is taught as a one year programme.

What can i do next?

You may progress to A2 level.

Are there any entry requirments?

There is no requirement for prior study of the subject.
Optional fieldwork visits

Are there any other requirements?

An interest in English literature and ancient cilvilisations.

How is the course assessed?

3 modular units of assessment for AS

2 modular units and optional independent investigation (on topic of own choice) for A2.

How much does the course cost?

All students who are joining a full time course and are under 19 years of age on the 1st September as their course commences, will not be required to pay tuition fees.
Otherwise: To be confirmed.

Are there any exam fees?

Exam fees are not payable by 16-19 year olds sitting these units for the first time.
Mature students will be advised as to the exam fees when enrolling prior to the start of the course.
