What is the course about?

An introduction to the history, terminology and theory of motion pictures. The first year includes specific emphasis upon British and Hollywood cinema.

What will I learn?

Students are encouraged to develop their own responses in discussions about:

• Different genres (e.g. Horror, Noir, etc)

• Film deconstruction (shot, frame, edit, etc.)

• Cinematic debates (representation, censorship, etc.)

When does the course start?

The courses start in September of each year.

How do I attend?

The course normally runs as an evening course, where applicable this subject may also be taken as a part time daytime programme.

The Welsh Exam Board

How long does the course last?

AS Year 1
A2 Year 2

What can i do next?

AS + A2 levels are recognised qualifications for a wide range of courses in Higher Education.

Are there any entry requirments?

Students aged 16-18 should, in addition to the normal GCSE requirements, have a pass in English or Media Studies. Mature and 16-18 students must have a keen interest in film.

Are there any other requirements?

All relevant films and reading / reference material will be provided as part of the course or be available via the college libraries.

How is the course assessed?

There are two examinations in the Summer and three pieces of written course work which are assessed by Easter

How much does the course cost?

All students who are joining a full time course and are under 19 years of age on the 1st September as their course commences, will not be required to pay tuition fees or examination fees.
Otherwise: To be confirmed.

Are there any exam fees?

Exam fees are not payable by 16-19 year olds sitting these units for the first time.
Mature students will be advised as to the exam fees when enrolling prior to the start of the course.
